FIFA 23 may face a new adversary: FIFA 23 might face a new contender to the FIFA throne in the shape of… a Lego Football game.
As per VGC, Lego has partnered with 2K Games to release several games based on sports influenced by the construction toys it makes.
The announcement comes when Lego is said to be looking to increase its gaming offerings following the expiration of its exclusive agreement to TT Games.
If this is the case, it could be the first non-TT Games designed Lego game in more than ten years. The most recent release, Lego Star Wars: The SkyWalker Saga, will launch shortly.
Details on the official announcement aren’t yet out, but it appears that there are at least 3 Lego sports games that are currently being developed.
The first is a soccer-themed game developed with Sumo Digital (Team Sonic Racing, Sackboy: A Big Adventure).
The game is scheduled to be released in the coming months for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
In 2023, we’ll be treated to an open-world Lego racing game developed by Visual Concepts (WWE 2K22) and then a second game to be released later, based on a major sports franchise.
We’re guessing either basketball or baseball.
The details aren’t precise yet, but we’ll hear some announcement with the news leaked out soon.
It could be that this partnership will see guests from Lego’s licenses join involved.
This means that we might witness Harry Potter kicking a soccer ball alongside Batman or Obi-Wan-Kenobi. But we’ll need to keep an eye on it.
Opinion: Don’t become a FIFA copycat.
The announcement comes as a shock at best. However, it is believed to be an attempt by 2K to broaden its offerings into games targeted towards young people.
A family-friendly company such as Lego is certainly sensing if the company hopes to reach these goals – although we’re unsure how long the synergy between Lego and the sports industry will go.
Lego Racing makes some sense. Lego Technic vehicles have been a mainstay of the brand over many years, and we’re able to see innovative customization options that create a game that feels like Lego.
However, we don’t know how these ideas can be applied to the soccer game or any other sports in general.
Certain recently released Lego sets have created Old Trafford and the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to life as bricks; however, these are primarily adult-oriented dioramas, not reimagining soccer’s game using Lego bricks.
Based on the success and ingenuity that have been the case with TT Games’ developed Lego titles, we’re hoping that we’re not watching a Lego Plastic-skinned FIFA 23 knock-off.
However, with the studio not involved in this project, watching what 2K announces to learn more information and if the game exists will be interesting.
In the event of a disaster, we’ll get Mario Strikers Battle League to play later in the year if we’re looking for a more cartoony soccer experience. Also, Konami’s eFootball, too…
