How it Works

Designed for your needs, supported by research.

Session Overview

Same-day access to a trained specialist. Just $35/session.

In a single 45-minute video or phone call, you’ll gain perspective and actionable steps to help you move forward. Schedule additional sessions as needed – no membership or commitment required.

Step 1

Share some basic info about what brings you to Basis.

Tell us how you’re feeling and what you’d like help with. Your specialist will have this context so you can jump right into the discussion, or you can take the conversation in a new direction entirely if things change.

Step 2

Indicate preferences for your Basis Specialist. We'll match you accordingly.

All Basis Specialists are trained in research-backed approaches to help you work through tough situations. But we know that sometimes it can be more comfortable to speak with someone of a particular gender, or who has experience helping others with a particular topic.

Step 3

Pick a time for your session.

Life doesn’t operate in a 9-5 window. Basis Specialists are available early mornings before work, evenings after the kids are in bed, and weekends when you have a break from classes.

Step 4

At the scheduled time, log into your account to join the video or phone session.

Your specialist will take some time getting to know you and how you're feeling. They’ll ask questions to help explore the issue. From there, you’ll talk about how things might look in an ideal world.

Step 5

End the session with fresh perspective and a concrete takeaway.

Basis sessions are up to 45 minutes devoted entirely to you. Don’t need that much time? You can end earlier. In either case, the goal is to walk away feeling lighter and better equipped to handle whatever you’re facing.

Step 6

Schedule additional sessions as needed – no membership or commitment required.

It only takes one session to walk away feeling lighter. For subsequent sessions, you can talk to the same specialist again or mix it up and talk to someone else.

FAQ

Question:

Are the sessions confidential and anonymous?

Answer:

Yes, 100%. Basis Specialists are required to follow strict confidentiality rules. Neither Basis nor your specialist will ever share information from your session. You can also choose to go by a name other than your real first name to ensure anonymity. Your account and contact information are stored securely on Basis’ servers and are never shared with specialists or other third parties.

Question:

Who are the specialists?

Answer:

Basis Specialists are empathetic people who have completed a comprehensive training program developed by former Stanford psychologists. Basis training applies the most up-to-date science on how to work through life’s tough moments. Basis Specialists aren’t licensed medical professionals and they won’t diagnose or treat a medical condition. They can, however, help you work through everyday challenges in a structured way that research shows to be more effective than “just dealing with it.” Basis clients report on their experience, allowing us to maintain the highest standards for specialist performance.

Question:

Do I meet with the same person each time?

Answer:

Only if you want to. Some people prefer the familiarity of someone they’ve spoken to before. Others prefer to mix it up and care more about fitting sessions around their schedule.

Question:

What is the research-backed approach?

Answer:

Basis Specialists are trained in the fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing and Structured Problem Solving. Over 200 clinical trials have shown these approaches to be the most effective for working through personal challenges. The training is administered by the Basis team and was developed by Stanford psychologists.

Question:

Is Basis a substitute for traditional therapy?

Answer:

The services offered by Basis Specialists are different than traditional therapy and cannot substitute for medical or emergency services. Basis specialists cannot make a formal medical diagnosis, nor can they give you medical advice. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 9-1-1. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline is available 24/7 to provide free and confidential emotional support at 1-800-273-8255.
