Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

What is Basis?

Answer:

Basis is problem solving and support for everyday challenges. The conversation is guided by a trained specialist and takes place over video or phone on our website or mobile app. Sessions are designed to help you feel better today and build resilience for tomorrow.

Question:

Who are the specialists?

Answer:

Basis Specialists complete a comprehensive training program developed by former Stanford psychologists. Many have backgrounds as crisis hotline counselors, peer support counselors, and/or are pursuing graduate studies in health fields. Specialist training is highly selective, accepting less than 2% of applicants into the program. Clients provide feedback on their experience, allowing us to maintain the highest standards for specialist performance.

Question:

What is the research-backed approach?

Answer:

The foundation of our approach consists of Motivational Interviewing and Structured Problem Solving. Thirty years of research and over 200 clinical trials have shown these approaches to be the most effective for working through personal challenges.

Question:

How much do sessions cost?

Answer:

A 45-minute video or phone session costs $35. Sessions are always on your terms – there is no recurring billing or subscription required.

Question:

Do I talk to the same specialist each time?

Answer:

Only if you want to. Some people prefer the familiarity of someone they’ve spoken to before. Others prefer to mix it up or care more about fitting sessions around their schedule.

Question:

Are sessions confidential and anonymous?

Answer:

Yes, 100%. Basis Specialists are required to follow strict confidentiality rules and do not have access to any personally identifiable information. You can even choose to go by a name other than your real first name. Sessions are not recorded and only you and your specialist can see notes or takeaways from your session. Your account and contact information are stored securely on Basis’ servers and are never shared with specialists or other third parties.

Question:

Are Basis Specialists licensed therapists?

Answer:

Basis Specialists are not licensed therapists, and they won’t diagnose or treat mental illness. However, they do utilize the most up-to-date science on how to effectively work through challenges and feel better. A number of studies show that trained, unlicensed paraprofessionals provide high-quality care.

Question:

Is Basis covered by insurance?

Answer:

Basis is not a medical service and is not currently in-network with any insurance providers. Some insurance providers offer reimbursement for certain types of mental health services – we recommend checking directly with your insurance provider to see if a service like Basis is covered.

Question:

Where is Basis currently available?

Answer:

At this time, Basis can support users with a United States, Canada, or New Zealand phone number.
