How does the Basis app work?

Basis connects you with people trained in science-proven methods for how to feel better about challenging personal situations. You pick a time, we connect you with a specialist, and then you talk through whatever challenge you’re dealing with. The impact is immediate and you’ll leave the session with a concrete takeaway and plan.


What are the research-proven tools?

Basis specialists are trained in the fundamentals of motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral science. These are the tools that research has shown to be most effective in working through personal challenges. The training is administered by the Basis team and was developed by Stanford psychologists.


Are the sessions confidential?

Yes. Basis specialists are required to follow strict confidentiality rules, and Basis will never share information from your session.


What happens in a Basis session?

Your first session is a video chat or phone call with a Basis specialist. They'll take some time getting to know you, what you're feeling, and how you'd like to improve. After that, they'll walk you through a number of tools and exercises that the latest research has shown to help you feel better.


Who are the specialists?

Basis specialists are empathetic people who have completed a comprehensive training program developed by Stanford psychologists. The Basis training program utilizes the most up-to-date science in how to overcome challenge personal situations. Basis specialists aren't licensed medical professionals, but they are able to provide you with many of the same skills and content you'd get from a licensed provider. Users report on their experience, allowing us to maintain the highest standards for specialist performance.


Are the specialists screened?

Yes. We screen all specialists before they’re allowed to go through training. We also require them to undergo a rigorous assessment of their abilities and knowledge before they're allowed to meet with clients.


Does it work?

Definitely. Everyone worries about things and goes through low periods, but few people know the best way to handle those issues. Luckily there is science that has proven which approaches actually work. Research has also shown that with adequate training, individuals without advanced degrees can be as effective as a licensed provider but at a fraction of the cost. Basis specialists are trained in the latest evidence-based techniques and are eager to help you.


How do you make sure the specialists are accountable to results?

At the end of your session, you will rate and provide feedback on your Basis specialist. Highly-rated specialists are given priority when new clients sign up. Lower rated specialists are removed from the Basis network.


Do I meet with the same person each time?

Only if you want to. Some people prefer the familiarity of someone they've spoken to before. Others prefer to mix it up and care more about fitting sessions around their schedule. If you like your specialist, simply favorite them at the end of the session to be able to schedule with them again.


Is the Basis app a substitute for traditional therapy?

The services offered by Basis specialists are different than traditional therapy and cannot substitute for medical or emergency services.
