To New Beginnings – Intel Acquires Basis

Today marks a special day for the entire Basis family – our team, our customers and all those who have supported and believed in our vision. We are excited to announce that Basis has been acquired by Intel.

While it is a new beginning in some ways, we remain true to the simple mission we started with – to build products that help people lead healthier lives.

Building A Better Mousetrap

“Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.” – Margaret Mead.

We started with just a few folks (and one dog) in our modest offices in San Francisco several years ago. A mix of engineers and product designers, we sought to build the next generation of health trackers that would know more and do more for your health than existing products could. We told everyone that would listen what we were trying to accomplish and how it would change the way people understood their health.

Fast-forward to today, we’ve accomplished a LOT. Countless prototypes, user experience studies and marathon coding sessions later, we shipped the Basis band to customers who had been patiently waiting. It contained the most sensors of any health tracker on the market in a wearable form factor. And we built a software experience that not only told you more about your fitness and sleep, but did so automatically, in a way that helped you build healthy habits.

Throughout that journey, other committed stalwarts joined our cause. We added many more talented folks to the team, worked with great investors, found partners like Amazon and Best Buy, and even found time to adopt a few more dogs. While many things have changed along the way, our desire to deliver the world’s most advanced health tracker – both device and experience – remains untouched.

Why Intel?

Most know Intel as the legendary company that Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore founded in 1968, putting the “silicon” in Silicon Valley. We’ve come to know Intel at a slightly deeper level than that. They’ve been strong supporters of our vision and of our team, investing in Basis and being on our board since October 2013. Their mission to create and extend computing technology to connect and enrich the lives of every person, meshes well with our own. Plus, as we talked more, we found that we shared a common purpose in applying the very best technology in the world to helping people lead healthier lives. Intel has a broad wearables strategy and we are now a key part of it.

We felt like the momentum Basis had generated on its own would only be greater with the technical, manufacturing, global reach and support resources Intel has to offer. So, we are as excited about the announcement today as the day we started Basis, because Intel can help our team make a bigger difference in the world.

Basis will be an integral part of Intel’s new devices group. So, if you’re a user of our product or partner, it means you will see continued innovation from Basis while still staying true to our mission. If you are a current customer of Basis, while the Intel deal constitutes a transfer of ownership and control, we continue to abide by our privacy policy, respecting all your data. We will also continue to be your source for customer support, software updates and other aspects of the product.

Thank You

Basis has come a long way in a relatively short period of time and accomplished something few startups get to enjoy. None of it would have been possible without the trust and patience of our customers. Thanks to each and every one of you.

Also, our sincerest thanks to our families and loved ones who have been with us in every step of our journey at Basis. And thank you Intel and all those who have supported and believed in our vision. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Here’s to new beginnings!

The Basis Team

If you do get a band somehow it should work fine, but please be aware that there may be compatibility issues with foreign smart phones.

  17. Any chance, you be adding Heart Rate Variability feature? I find that now that I am more active, the HR Data is not very useful since the HR Data drops during moderate exercise.

  19. Hey Basis Team, im a Landscaper, I was looking into your product because I have always wonder how much I walk on a daily bases. How durable is that B1? The two main reason that I would purchase this item is to track how much I move through the day and my sleep schedule.

    • Hi Phil, good question! We designed Basis to be durable and suitable for all day wear. That being said, we haven’t done impact testing with the Basis band. We do have a 30 day return policy, no questions asked if you would like to see how the Basis band can improve your health and sleep.
